Getting a house on the market is no small task. The checklist seems miles long to even get the house ready to sell - not to mention what happens after the closing date is set. Packing can be one of the most stressful moments in a home selling process. Here are some great packing tips to help you put things away ahead of time while you list your house, and then some tips to pack it all up when its time to move to your dream home.
1) Get Organized
Free boxes - check your liquor and grocery stores for good boxes
Vacuum storage bags maximize space!
Bubble Wrap for breakables along with using every towel, sheet, and blanket in the house.
Color code - make each room its own color, either use colored construction paper or colored duct tape to designate which box goes where.
Tape off all items that can spill - any liquid, soap, cleaner, cooking oils…etc.
2) First Day Essentials Bin
Fill this bin with all the items you need as your moving in: paper towel, trash bags, box cutter, scissors, Lysol wipes, toilet paper, paper plates and cups, soap…etc. If you need it right away it goes in this bin. Don’t forget to keep your toolbox or tool man handy for assembling furniture!
3) Pack For Your New Home
Pack by room for your NEW home, not the one you are moving out of. Envision which room you want this item to go in rather than where it is currently living.
4) In the Kitchen
Pack an essentials box for the kitchen - plastic plates, cups, paper towel, PB&J ingredients, your coffee maker, accessories, and of course, coffee!
Wrap plates in bubble wrap and pack them on their side in boxes rather than stacking - this will also help you from making the box too heavy and full.
Glasses - You know those single socks you have in the laundry room hoping to one day find their match? Use them to pack your glasses. Slip one glass in a sock and you have a perfectly packed and protected glass for moving.
Silverware - everything in a silverware tray? Leave it there, cover it in plastic wrap and go!
Drawers - there are a lot of random things in your kitchen drawers but hopefully there is some order to them. Keep things in the right category by separating them into plastic bags before putting them in boxes
5) Bedroom
Jewelry - thread necklaces through a straw to avoid tangles, earrings cam be put into old egg cartons with a cotton ball for extra cushion.
Use trash bags to quickly pack hanging clothing - now it is all protected in its own fancy garment bag!
Kid toy bins - bring out the plastic wrap and cover each bin.
6) Furniture
Once furniture is disassembled, place all pieces into a plastic bag, label which piece of furniture it goes to, and tape it to the back of said furniture.
